Yep, it can happen. Happened to me today. I was removing an aluminum scratch with some medium-coarse steel wool along with some sealer. I rubbed it out using moderate to high pressure not thinking it was going to scuff the surface but after I rinsed off the sealer with some acetone there was a definite scuff mark left on the surface of the Honed Absolute Black back splash I was working on. @#%!&!!! Very similar to a scuff left by a green Scotch Brite scrubbie pad. Only way to remove the scuff mark was to rehone the piece using a 1000 grit pad. When finished, the piece looked awesome.

Has anyone else had this problem using steel wool?
